What to Expect From Dental Implants

Tooth loss is relatively common, and it can happen because of everything from trauma to the teeth to aging, tooth decay and more. When you lose one or more teeth, your dentist may recommend that you get dental implants. A dental implant requires the dentist to surgically install a metal post into the gum, and it will be anchored into the jaw bone.

When this area has healed, the tooth cap will be placed on it. The tooth cap has the look of your natural tooth, including the same shape and color. Altogether, the tooth will look and function just as your real tooth did.

There is a healing process associated with the installation of a dental implant, but in exchange for this time, you will be assured that your new tooth is securely anchored in your jawbone. This is different than dentures, which are simply placed on top of the gum. With dentures, the other teeth may move and shift, and your jaw bone may deteriorate because there is nothing anchored in it.

If you have lost a tooth or if you are planning to have a damaged tooth removed in the near future, a smart idea is to contact a dental professional to learn more about dental implants and to determine if this is the right option for your situation. In most cases, dental implants are a preferred option because of their ability to promote great oral health over the years.
